Group Presentation of Immigration Law
In groups of 4-5, your task is to create a PowerPoint presentation based
on a current or historic immigration law. Your presentation must be
10-15 slides, including an introduction slide and a bibliography slide.
On the first slide (introduction slide), include your full names, the
course, and a presentation title. A minimum of three different sources
must be used. If using websites, the url must end in .org, .edu, or
.gov. (The use of Wikipedia is not permitted.) You must cite every
source that is used. You are free to pick your own group. Communicate
with one another through email or personal message. Within your
presentation, you need to answer the following questions:
Give a brief history of the conditions leading up to the law.
What does the law say?
Which group did this law affect, and how?
What was the impact of the law on the U.S.?
Did it do what it was intended to do?
Is the law still in place, or was it changed or supplanted by another immigration law?
List of Approved Immigration Laws:
Amerasian Homecoming Act of 1987
California's Proposition 187
Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
The DREAM Act or the American DREAM Act
Gentlemen’s Agreement
Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965
Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA)
Illegal Immigration Reform and Responsibility Act of 1996
Immigration Act of 1990
Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1975
Literacy Act
Mc Carran-Walter Act of 1952
National Origin System of 1921
Refugee Act of 1980
The Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934
*Other laws may be used, but you must have instructor approval before beginning your project.
Check your syllabus for due dates. Only one member of the group should
submit your project (as a ppt or .pptx attachment) to the forum.
EVERYONE needs to have a group of 4-5 participants. Individual ppt
presentations will not be accepted. Communicating with members of a
group is an important skill to practice (even online)! Don't wait until
the last minute! You are each individually responsible to make sure that
your presentation is posted on time and correctly. Your presentation is
worth 10% of your total grade. 8% of this is based on the content of
your presentation. Generally speaking, everyone in a group will receive
the same grade. The other 2% is based on your responses to classmates’
presentations in the Group Presentation Forum. Two detailed responses to
classmates are required. Contact me with any questions. Good luck!
